The invention relates to a method and a device for storing the local time zone. The invention is characterized by subdividing the surface of the earth into elements of area (1) and determining for every element of area an identifying record number (index); by storing, for the elements of area (1) through which no time zone border runs, a respective first time zone information (8) identifying a time zone (12, 13, 14); by storing, for the elements of area (1) through which a time zone border (5, 6, 7) runs, coordinates of at least one location (G₁₁...G₃₇) of the time zone border (5, 6, 7); and by storing, for a time zone identification system based on the stored location (G₁₁...G₃₇) of the time zone border (5, 6, 7), a second time zone information (9) identifying the time zone (12, 13, 14).
