PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid droplet discharge apparatus which surely removes adherent matter solidly adhering to a nozzle surface of a liquid droplet discharge head, and surely prevents the removed aderent matter from readhering, and also to provide a method for cleaning the liquid droplet discharge head. SOLUTION: The liquid droplet discharge apparatus 10 is provided with: the liquid droplet discharge head 20 having a plurality of nozzles to discharge liquid droplets; and a maintenance unit 40 to maintain the liquid droplet discharge head 20. The maintenance unit 40 is provided with: a cleaning member 42 to press contact the nozzle surface 21 of the liquid droplet discharge head 20 and to reserve a moistening liquid; a moistening liquid supply means 48 to supply the moistening liquid to the cleaning member 42; a moving means 46 to move the cleaning member 42 along the nozzle surface 21 while making the cleaning member 42 press contact the nozzle surface 21; and a refreshing means 52 and 54 to remove the adherent matter adhering to the cleaning member 42. Hence, the maintenance unit is constituted so that it supplies the moistening liquid to the press-contacting surface of the cleaning member 42 press contacting the nozzle surface 21 from the inside of the cleaning member 42.
