In a melt-spinning apparatus, finely-divided thermoplastic material is confined while first being pressed into a solid block against an electrically heated orificed confining plate, thereby melting the leading surface of the block and passing it through the orifices as a molten material, the melt filtered, and the filtered melt further heated by contact with an independently electrically heated spinneret plate through which it is extruded to form filaments. In the apparatus of Fig. 1, powdered material is conveyed by pressure screw 12 along the splined barrel 11, which is surrounded by water-cooling jacket 14, and is packed into a solid plug 16 against the electrically heated melting diaphragm 17. The melt 20 passes through the filter pack 21, constructed of a series of stainless steel screens, the coarsest at the top and the finest at the bottom, thence through the filter support 23 to the electrically heated spinneret plate 25, from which it is extruded as filaments 27. In Figs. 6 and 7, the filter support 123b having an annular melt passage replaces the support 23 of Fig. 1. In Fig. 6 a flat spinneret is used, and in Fig. 7 a cup-shaped spinneret. Using an extruder barrel of 1“ inches diameter, a screw and barrel only about 5 inches long may be used. Specifications 861,888 and 867,020 are referred to. |
