An arc suppression device (18) is connected in series by electric lines (17,19) to an alternating voltage generator (7.1) and is also connected to the electrodes (3,4) of a gas discharge mechanism (5). The arc suppression device has controllable resistance such that a smaller resistance is generated than when arcs occur.
