PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a production cost and calculate a travel distance of a carriage with a high degree of accuracy. SOLUTION: A distance calculating device is provided with: drive wheels 110 each mounted on the carriage 100 and supplied with drive force externally to move the carriage 100 on a travel path L; an auxiliary wheel 120 mounted on the carriage 100 separately from the drive wheels 110; an incremental encoder 140 for outputting a pulse in response to the rotation quantity of the auxiliary wheel 120; a mark detection part 150 for detecting a mark M provided on a travel path L side; a position identification part 161 for identifying a position on the travel path L corresponding to the mark M based on the detection of the mark M with the mark detection part 150; and a distance calculation part 162 for totalizing travel distances of the carriage from a position identified with the position identification part 161, by counting the number of pulses based on the pulses output from the incremental encoder 140.
