In a shoe press belt (10) of a papermaking machine, the part of the paper web-facing layer in which water-holding grooves (40) are formed is composed of a surface sublayer (52), having a relatively low hardness, and an underlying layer (43) having a relatively high hardness. The higher hardness of the underlying layer (43) prevents cracks from forming where the cross-sectional shape of the grooves (40) tends to change as the belt is compressed. The lower hardness of the surface sublayer (52) prevents the formation of cracks as a result of forces acting on the belt in the direction opposite to the machine direction at the nip location in a papermaking machine. <IMAGE> |
