An automatic propulsion apparatus for a vacuum cleaner is provided to improve reliability by transmitting action, which moves the vacuum cleaner back and forth, through a wheel part contacted to a floor, to improve durability by forming a sensor unit with mechanical structure, and to cut down manufacturing cost by simplifying structure. An automatic propulsion apparatus of a vacuum cleaner is composed of a sensor unit(300) installed in a brush assembly and provided with a wheel part(310) turned in the opposite direction to movement of the vacuum cleaner so as to generate a backward or forward movement signal in turning the wheel part, and a driving unit moving the vacuum cleaner according to the backward or forward movement signal. The sensor unit includes a connection part(320) connected to the wheel part and the brush assembly, and a switch part(330) turned on and off by the connection part. The wheel part has a wheel(311) contacted to a floor, a housing(312) supporting a wheel, and a housing shaft(313) installed in an upper part of the housing. The wheel part is contacted to the floor and turned by inertia and friction.
