<p>Apparatus for controlling the temperature of a mold in a plastics processing machine comprises channels for a heat transfer medium in the mold, each corresponding to a zone of the mold so that the temperature in each zone can be controlled independently; temperature sensors for measuring the actual temperature (Ta) in each zone; temperature sensors for measuring the inlet temperature (Ti) of the heat transfer medium; and flow sensors for measuring the flow (F) of heat transfer medium through each channel. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling the temperature of a mold using apparatus as above, where each zone is supplied with a pulse of heat transfer medium during each molding cycle, comprising continuously measuring Ta, Ti and F during the pulse of the i-th cycle; calculating the quantity of heat (Q(i)) supplied to or removed from the zone during the pulse; multiplying Q(i) by a factor K1 to determined the quantity of heat (Q(i+1)) to be supplied to or removed in the (i+1)-th cycle; and repeating the above steps until the last cycle has been performed; provided that the pulse duration in the first step is such that the quantity of heat supplied to or removed from the zone corresponds to Q(i+1).</p> |
