<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display and a lighting device wherein a light beam is uniformly emitted from the whole emission surface of a light guide plate by adopting a structure wherein light guide plates, each having a small emission area even at a part distant from a part where a light source is provided, are layered. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 1 is provided with a liquid crystal display panel 2, a prism sheet 3, a light guide plate unit 400 with a step system, wherein light guide plate units, each having a light guide plate 41 emitting a light beam made incident in an inner part from an emission surface and supplying the light beam to the liquid crystal display panel 2 and a light source 42 emitting the light beam made incident in the inner part of the light guide plate 41, are constituted in three steps and a reflection plate 5. Even when a weakened and darkened part is generated in light beams emitted from first and second light guide plate units 4a and 4b, the part is reinforced by light beams emitted from the second and a third light guide plate units 4b and 4c.
