The support has a support body (10) and a fixing belt (12), whose opposing ends are detachably connected to the body, so that the belt retains the body on a neck or a collar-bone of a player, while supporting a violin or viola on the body. The belt extends around the neck. The body has an upper area (13) formed from a hard foam, and lower area (16) formed from a soft foam. The area (16) is supported at the collar-bone of the player. An independent claim is also included for a method for supporting a violin or viola on a player.
