PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carrier of an olefin polymerization catalyst which has a high polymerization activity and yields an excellent powdery polyolefin without deteriorating its performance such as stereoregularity, a solid catalytic component using the carrier, and a preparation method of a polyolefin using the catalytic component. SOLUTION: The carrier is an ethoxy-containing magnesium compound obtained from metallic magnesium, ethanol and halogen and/or a halogen-containing compound containing≥0.0001 gram atom halogen against 1 gram atom magnesium. The reaction is carried out with amounts of ethanol satisfying the following molar ratios: C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(I)/Mg=6 to 32, C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(F)/Mg=3 to 16, and C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(E)/C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(I)=0.1 to 0.8, provided that C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(I), C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(F) and C<SB>2</SB>H<SB>5</SB>OH(E) are amounts of ethanol loaded at the beginning of the reaction, ethanol remaining at the end of the reaction and ethanol distilled, respectively.
