An apparatus for controlling household appliances by using a TV is provided to more accurately control operating states of the household appliances as a user wants by monitoring current states of the household appliances through the bidirectional communication of the TV. A storing unit(22) stores an automatic control program of household appliances. A remote controller receiving unit(21) receives an automatic control program request and a control command of the household appliance through a remote controller from a user. A control unit(23) controls a display unit(25) to display an automatic control OSD(On Screen Display) through the stored automatic control program according to the request of the user, and controls an infrared ray transmitting unit(24) to transmit the control command inputted from the user to the corresponding household appliance by referring to the displayed automatic control OSD. The infrared ray transmitting unit(24) transmits a power on/off control signal to the corresponding household appliance under the control of the control unit(23). The display unit(25) displays the automatic control OSD under the control of the control unit(23).
