A composition for preventing or treating obesity comprising 1-deoxynojirimycin is provided to reduce body weight without side effects including nutrition imbalance such as poisoning or increase of blood pressure. The pharmaceutical or health food composition for preventing or treating obesity comprises 1-deoxynojirimycin represented by the formula(1) and its pharmaceutically or sitologically acceptable salts, wherein the 1-deoxynojirimycin represented by the formula(1) is isolated from cocoon powder; the pharmaceutical composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; the amount of 1-deoxynojirimycin is 0.0001-99.9% based on the total weight of the composition; and the composition is formulated as tablet, pill, powder, granule, capsule, suspension, liquid, emulsion, syrup or injection.
