<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multicolor image forming apparatus which is excellent in maintainability when exchanging a cartridge, whose constitution is simplified and which is miniaturized and achieves the reduction of cost. <P>SOLUTION: The multicolor image forming apparatus includes a plurality of developing cartridges obtained by integrating a developer storage part for storing developer and a developing means for developing an image as a cartridge and exchanged with the completion of the consumption of the stored developer, and forms a multicolor image by moving the respective developing cartridges to a developing position opposed to an image carrier. The multicolor image forming apparatus includes a developer residual amount detection means for detecting that the stored developer in the respective developing cartridges has been consumed, and a display means for displaying what developing cartridge consumes the developer when the developer residual amount detection means detects that the stored developer has been consumed.
