PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscopic observation device having the automatic tracking a function of a specimen sample without requiring a video camera or a memory for tracking the specimen sample. SOLUTION: The microscopic observation device 100 has a laser scanning confocal microscope 110 and four optical scanning systems 130 for feeding exciting beams to the confocal microscope 110. Each of four optical scanning systems 130 has a drive device 141 for driving an XY scanning mechanism 135 and a position calculator 142 for calculating the position of the converging point of the exciting beam. The microscopic observation device 100 also has a signal processor 151 for converting the electric signal, which is outputted from the photodetector 138 of each of the optical scanning systems 130 to a binarized pulse, a correlation analyzer 152 for calculating an autocorrelation function from the binarized pulse outputted from the signal processor 151 and a computer 126 for controlling a sample stage controller 125 for moving a sample stage 122 on the basis of the calculated autocorrelation function.
