A head rest (1) for a seat, especially in a vehicle, comprises a base member which has a primary carrier member (3) and at least one holding bar (2,2'), and a padded member (7). The holding bars can be pushed in and out of the seat. The primary carrier member is rigidly connected to the holding bars, and the padded member is rigid with respect to the primary carrier. The headrest is modular and the padding can swivel with respect to the primary carrier member. The headrest has an adjustment, which allows the padded section height to be adjusted.
