The engine has intake and exhaust valves operated by cams (20,22) of respective cam shafts. The cams are assigned to exhaust valve of each cylinder. The cylinders are alternately brought in effect connection with the valves over a switching mechanism, where one of the cams is switched in a cold start and cold running phase. The cam has two cam elevations (23,24) which are operated during the exhaust and intake phases respectively. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine.
