[Also in Groups XXIX and XXXV] A mechanism for operating a valve comprises a valve operating shaft 20, Fig. 2, mounted in a body, spring means 39 for storing energy for rotating the shaft, motor means 42 for loading the spring means, latch means mounted in the body for rendering the shaft rotating means ineffective when the valve is one condition of operation, means for rendering the latch means ineffective to permit the shaft to rotate and place the valve in another condition of operation and means responsive to the degree of loading of the spring means for rendering said motor ineffective when the spring means is loaded and for rendering the motor effective to load the spring means when the stored energy therein is partially expanded. The spring 39, tensioned by an electric motor 42, 45 connected to it at 40, closes a gate valve 17 via crank 19, shaft 20, and spring casing 22 connected to the opposite end of the spring until an arm 29, Figs. 2, 4, on the shaft abuts a latch 27 controlled by a solenoid 58, a switch 56 for which is closed by lever 59 moving on to a flat 28 on the spring casing. On moving switch 75, Fig. 8, downwards, battery B releases arm 29 from latch 27 via conductors 76, 79, closed switches 77, 56, solenoid 58 and lever 55, so that spring 39 rotates casing 22 to open valve 17, arm 29 abuts a latch 27a, and another lever and flat on casing 22 closes a switch 56a in series with latch-operating solenoid 58a, so that a circuit is prepared for releasing latch 27a and closing the valve when switch 75 is raised. As spring 39 unwinds, so motor 46 rewinds until the increased tension of the spring, due to arm 29 abutting latch 27a, stops the rotor and produces opposite rotation of the motor casing 43 against springs 65 compressed between bolts 66 on the valve body and one end of a slot 49 in a motor casing flange 47, until a motor casing abutment opens the normally closed motor switch 60. In order to close the valve, when mounted, e.g. on an aircraft or boat, in the event of a crash, the crash impulse closes switch 86 and energizes solenoid 84 to shift a switch arm 89 to complete the closing circuit 90, 81 and break the opening circuit 76, 79.
