The method involves providing a belt conveyor with an endless belt (11) for transporting printing-material sheets, where the belt has openings (12), and with a roller for guiding the belt, where the roller has pins (10) for engaging in the openings. The belt is driven with the roller via a form lock between the pins and the openings and not by friction between an inner surface of the belt and a peripheral surface of the roller. The printing-material sheets are transported on the belt.
