PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of achieving adequate reduction in Barkhausen noise. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head 1 has an air bearing surface S and comprises magnetic shield layers 21 and 23, an MR element 22, bias-applying layers 25, and a hard magnetic layer 26. Each of the magnetic shield layers 21 and 23 has an end face A1 forming the air bearing surface S, and an end face A2 located opposite to the end face A1. The MR element 22 is located between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 23 and on the end face A1 side. The bias-applying layers 25 are located between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 23 and apply a bias magnetic field to the MR element 22. The hard magnetic layer 26 is located between the magnetic shield layers 21 and 23 and on the end face A2 side. A height H2 of the hard magnetic layer 26 is larger than 1/3 and smaller than 1/2 of a height of each of the magnetic shield layers 21 and 23. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
