SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROCESSING VISUAL INFORMATION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a visual information processing system capable of new visual information processing, which has not been acquired before, by combining an optical spatial modulation element and an imager. SOLUTION: The visual information processing system is provided with both an optical pattern generating part having the optical spatial modulation element for modulating radiant light from a light source on the basis of a prescribed optical pattern for irradiating an object to be imaged with radiant light modulated on the basis of the optical pattern and an image characteristics extraction part for imaging the object to be imaged on which the optical pattern is superposed and extracting the amount of characteristics of the object to be imaged. The optical pattern comprises a plurality of optical patterns capable of acquiring three-dimensional information of the object to be imaged on the basis of the principle of triangulation and optical patterns in which at least either the type or number of the optical patterns is adaptively controlled on the basis of the amount of characteristics extracted by the image characteristics extraction part.
