METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR GENERATING LOUD PACKETS TO ESTIMATE PATH LOSS

A method and an apparatus for generating loud packets to estimate a path loss are provided to enable a second WTRU to determine the path loss between a first WTRU and the second WTRU by subtracting determined signal strength from determined transmission power, thereby enabling the WTRU to estimate the path loss that separates the WTRU from other neighboring WTRUs even when the WTRU cannot recognize them at current transmission power. A method for estimating a path loss in a wireless communication system comprises the following steps of: enabling a first one of the WTRUs(Wireless Transmit/Receive Units) to transmit a loud packet; enabling a second one of the WTRUs to receive the loud packet; enabling the second WTRU to determine signal strength of the received loud packet; enabling the second WTRU to determine transmission power of the received loud packet; and enabling the second WTRU to determine a path loss between the first WTRU and the second WTRU by subtracting the determined signal strength from the determined transmission power.
