A process and an apparatus for encoding a numerical data (DATA) in a video signal (1), which is formed by a succession of photograms (2), each photogram (2) having an active video area of N rows and M columns and being able to be subdivided into L blocks of pixels (B 1 ). The numerical data (DATA) is converted into a base B number in order to obtain a sequence of K digits (OD k ), a colour (COL k ) is associated with each digit (OD k ), in accordance with a pre-established digit-colour relationship, K blocks of pixels are identified from the L blocks of pixels, and each of the colours (COL k ) is assigned to a corresponding block of the K blocks of pixels.
