A method for inspecting a surface of a hard disc drive and a recording medium suitable for the method are provided to effectively perform the inspection of the surface by dividing a data sector into two regions according to the importance degree of data, and then applying different defect determinant references to the two regions. A data sector is divided into at least two regions according to the importance degree of data(S202). The same data are recorded in the two regions of the data sector(S204). The data recorded in the two regions are reproduced(S206). The data sector is inspected by applying a first defect determinant reference to the data reproduced in the first region of the data sector and applying a second defect determinant reference, which is different from the first defect determinant reference, to the data reproduced in the second region of the data sector(S208).
