A method and an apparatus for encoding or decoding a moving picture are provided to generate residual data according to a prediction mode uniformly applied to all of color components to increase correlation of residual data and improve moving picture encoding efficiency. A prediction mode uniformly applied to all the color components constructing a predetermined color space is selected. First residual data corresponding to a difference between the current picture and a predicted picture for each of the color components are generated according to the selected prediction mode(809). Second residual data corresponding to a difference between the first residual data units are generated(810). The second residual data are encoded.
