The unit has orientable carrying wheels (1) fixed to a chassis of a ground transport vehicle, and pivoting around a vertical pivoting axis (2). A driving motor (3) has a drive shaft (4) connected in an operational manner to the wheels through a transmission (6) mounted in a gear box (5). The gear box has a housing cover (13) which closes an opening arranged in the gear box. The cover constitutes a bearing flange and carries a bearing (14) of spur gears (8, 9) of the transmission.
