PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a conductive support member having a configuration capable of preventing (1) abnormal discharge due to a dimensional change in a gap and (2) a dimensional change in a gap between each gap holding member and an electric resistance adjustment layer which is caused by an environmental change, by preventing a change in a gap between a charged surface and a surface to be charged, which are disposed in proximity with each other. SOLUTION: The conductive support member includes: a conductive support base 102A that is long and has the electric resistance adjustment layer 102B on its outside; and the gap holding members 102C inserted in step parts 102B1 formed in the longitudinal ends of the electric resistance adjustment layer 102B, and capable of setting a predetermined amount of gap between the outermost part of the electric resistance adjustment layer 102B and a member 101 facing that. Each step part 102B1 has an edge 102E formed from an inclined face whose outer shape dimension increases towards the downstream side from the upstream side in the direction where the gap holding member 102C is inserted. Each of the gap holding members 102C is shaped such that a level difference is made to set the predetermined amount gap when this member 102C is inserted into the step parts 102B1.
