PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly water-soluble polyuronic acid in an aqueous solvent with retention of such advantages originated from polysaccharides as less adverse influence upon surroundings and human bodies. SOLUTION: The water-soluble polyuronic acid shown by the chemical formulas (1) to (3) can be produced in an aqueous solvent at least by a process of oxidizing selectively a polysaccharide, a process of adding a polyvalent cation to the oxidized polysaccharide to produce a water-insoluble product, a process of washing the water-insoluble product with an aqueous solvent and a process of ion-exchanging the water-insoluble product washed with an aqueous solvent.
