PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium provided with excellent running durability, reliability and electromagnetic conversion characteristics even in a magnetic recording system having high recording density by suppressing the amount of a fatty acid metal salt on the surface of the medium causing error rate deterioration. SOLUTION: In the coating type magnetic recording medium wherein a magnetic layer containing at least ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder is provided on one surface of a supporting body, the index of the amount of the fatty acid metal salt on the surface of the magnetic layer measured by a total reflection absorption spectrum using a Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (ATR-FT-IR) is 0.005 or below and Y content contained in the ferromagnetic metal powder is 2 to 12 at% to the total amount of Fe and Co.
