PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information reproducing method that performs reading at the optimum reproducing speed in reproducing AV data, reduces noises and power consumption by vibration resulting from high-speed rotation, and performs reading at the maximum speed in reading ordinary data. SOLUTION: Since a transfer rate of data readout is determined according to a form of a reading request from users, a rotational speed of an information medium is determined according to a data transfer rate meeting the form of the reading request by the users. For example, when the data transfer rate is lower than a threshold, as in reproducing the AV data (Y of S3, S4), the reading at excessive high speed is avoided and the noises and power consumption resulting from high-speed rotation is reduced by lowering the rotational speed of the information medium (S6). On the other hand, since the transfer rate is larger than the threshold (N of S4), in data reading in a form of ripping, etc, even in the same AV data file, the reading at the maximum speed is made as well by keeping the rotational speed of the information medium at the upper limit.
