PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having a high reverse bias withstand voltage and an image display device provided with the same. SOLUTION: The organic EL element 1 is provided with a substrate 2, an anode 3, an organic layer 4, and a cathode 5. The cathode 5 is provided with a first cathode material 51 and a second cathode material 52, and the second cathode material 51 is formed to be laminated on the first cathode material 51. The cathode 5 is formed with the purpose that the thickness (sum of the thickness of the first cathode material 51 and the second cathode material 52) will be at least 50 nm.
