An apparatus and a method for processing multimedia data are provided to process multimedia data that are not able to be decoded by transcoding the multimedia data through an external device. A multimedia data processing apparatus includes a multimedia data input unit(41) for receiving multimedia data, a data format determination unit(42) for determining whether the multimedia data are decodable, a decoder(43) for decoding the multimedia data, and an output unit(44) for outputting the multimedia data decoded by the decoder. The apparatus further includes a data communication unit(45) communicated with an external computer(20), and a controller(46) for controlling the decoder to decode the multimedia data when the data format determination unit determines that the multimedia data are decodable. The controller transmits the multimedia data to the external computer through the data communication unit when the data format determination unit determines that the multimedia data are not decodable to transcode the multimedia data into decodable data and then decode the data.
