PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which can be easily operated, on the basis of the positional state of the imaging apparatus, and to provide a method of operating the imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus 100 is provided whose various operations are performed by an operator through a mode dial 51 and operation switches 52-64 which are provided on the body, and the imaging apparatus 100 is provided with a sensor 47 for detecting an acceleration or angular acceleration.
