PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To theoretically calculate an optimum thickness of a covering layer of a wire, which is composed of a core material and the covering layer formed around the core material, for a wire electric discharge machine. SOLUTION: The wire for a wire electric discharge machine is composed of the core material and the covering layer formed around the core material. When an average depth of a single discharge trace 5 formed to a workpiece made of the same material as that of the covering layer by single discharge with a die-sinking electric discharge machine is set as Have, an area of the single discharge trace formed to the workpiece by the single discharge with the die-sinking electric discharge machine as Sc, a discharge frequency as Fp, a surface area in the advancing direction of the wire per unit time asΔS, and an overlapping ratio X of the discharge traces on the surface of the wire as X=Sc*Fp/ΔS, the minimum thickness Tbmin of the covering layer can be calculated by calculating the minimum plating thickness Tbmin of brass plating by formula: Tbmin=Have*X.
