An apparatus and a method for controlling the volume in a television receiver are provided to reduce predetermined volumes corresponding to a plurality of sound levels at once by operating a remote controller when the level of sound output from a speaker of the television receiver is decreased. An apparatus for controlling the volume of sound output from a television receiver includes an audio processor(120) and a controller(150). The audio processor processes an input audio signal into an electric audio signal suitable for a speaker(110) of the television receiver. The controller sets the quantity of reduction of volume according to a control command inputted by a user and reduces the level of the electric audio signal output from the audio processor by the set quantity of reduction of volume in order to decrease the volume of sound output from the speaker by the set quantity of reduction of volume when a control command to reduce the volume is inputted.
