The device has a reformer (2) to generate hydrogen from another fuel e.g. diesel. A multi way valve (6) is intercalated between the reformer and an anode compartment (4) of a fuel cell (3), and another multi way valve (9) is intercalated between the compartment and a main burner (7). The valve (6) distributes the hydrogen to the cell or burner according to control instructions received from a control unit (8). The unit controls the valve (9) to divert hydrogen flow towards an auxiliary burner (10) with thermal power greater than the main burner during malfunctioning of the cell.
