PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refining method and a top-blown lance for refining with which in the case of oxidation-refining a molten metal by blowing an oxygen-containing gas toward the molten metal from the top-blown lance under reduced pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure, the refining is applied at high efficiency and high speed and the stickiness of a metal to a facility is reduced. SOLUTION: In the top-blown lance 13 for refining with which the molten metal is oxidation-refined by blowing the oxygen-containing gas toward the molten metal under atmosphere lower than the atmospheric pressure, by using the top-blown lance setting a Lavar nozzle 16 at the top part; the top-blown lance setting the plurality of sub-holes 20 satisfying following (1) formula, regarding a throat diameter (Dtt) and the setting number (N) to the throat diameter (Dt) of the Lavar nozzle around the Lavar nozzle, is used, and the flame or the combustion zone is formed by blowing the oxygen-containing gas from the sub-holes.
