The invention provides an energy-efficient, compact and cost-effective solution for driving a number of high- power LEDs for lighting applications. At least one switching power supply is used together with the number of LEDs being divided into at least one group, each separately energizable. The power supply accommodates to the changed load conditions of an energizing or de-energizing of one LED group by maintaining a wait time between each individual energizing and deenergizing.
