A combined friction and gear clutch, especially for an automatic transmission for a vehicle includes a guide rod (4) connected to the outer friction disc mounting (3) and operating in a guide slot (5) which ensures that the teeth of the gear clutch have sufficient relative movement to prevent tooth on tooth settings, e.g. baulking. The overall length of the combined clutch is minimized for compactness.
