PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of displaying a high-resolution stereoscopic image, even when directing the major axis of a screen to the left or to the right direction, and even when directing the minor axis of a screen to the left or the right direction. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a display unit, comprising a liquid crystal display panel 1 and a surface light source 15 which selectively emits first, second, third and fourth illumination light rays. When the display unit is turned into such a state that the major axis (x) of the screen is directed to the left or the right direction, first image data for left eye and image data for right eye, which are shifted each other with respect to the x-direction of the major axis of the screen, are selectively written in the liquid crystal display panel 1; and while the selective writing is synchronized, the first and the second illumination light rays are selectively emitted from the surface light source 15. When the display unit is turned into such a state that the minor axis (y) of the screen is directed to the left or the right direction, second image data for left eye and image data for right eye for displaying an image for left eye and an image for right eye which are shifted each other, with respect to the y-direction of the minor axis of the screen are selectively written in the liquid crystal display panel 1; and while the selective writing is synchronized, the third and the fourth illumination light rays are selectively emitted from the surface light source 15.
