1: 1: 1-Trifluoro-2-bromo-2-chloroethane is prepared by heating bromine and 1: 1: 1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane at 480-530 DEG C. with the ratio CF3.CH2Cl:Br2 in the range 2 : 1 to 5 : 1, the heated reaction zone extending beyond the point where virtually all of the bromine in the gas stream has been consumed. Alternatively, 1: 1: 1-trifluoro-2: 2-dibromo-2-chloroethane (which is an intermediate in the above reaction) is reacted with 1: 1: 1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane at 480-530 DEG C. By-products mentioned are CF2Br.CBr2Cl and CF3CCl=CClF3.
