A lacquer comprises (a) a polyester containing free hydroxyl groups and obtained by condensation from at least one polyhydroxy compound and a Diels-Alder adduct of an a -b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with anthracene or an anthracene derivative; (b) at least one polyisocyanate having at least one isocyanate group bonded to an aliphatic or hydroaromatic radical; (c) one or more organic solvents which are inert towards hydroxy and isocyanate groups, and, if desired, (d) a reaction accelerator or retarder. Specified anthracene derivatives are 1-methyl-, 2-ethyl- and 9:10-dimethyl anthracene. Specified unsaturated dicarboxylic acids are maleic, fumaric, methyl maleic, methyl fumaric, itaconic and glutaconic acid. Specified polyhydroxy compounds are ethylene, diethylene and 1:3-butylene glycol, 1:6-hexanediol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, pentaerythritol dibenzyl ether, trimethylol propane monoallyl ether, glycerine monoallyl ether, N-methyl diethanolamine, triethanolamine, N:N1-dihydroxyethylpiperazine, perhydrogenated-4:41 dihydroxydiphenyl dimethyl methane, 4:41-di-(hydroxyethoxy)diphenyldimethyl methane and 4:41-di-(hydroxyethoxy)-diphenyl sulphone. The Diels-Alder addition may be effected prior to, during or after the polyesterification. Specified polyisocyanates are hexamethylene, decamethylene, 1:4-cyclohexylene, 4:41-perhydrodiphenyl methane and 4:41-hexahydrodiphenyl diisocyanate, N:N1:N11-tris(isocyanatohexyl-buiret, 3-isocyanatophenyl-a -isocyanatoethane and their reaction products with less than the equivalent amounts of polyhydric alcohols. Specified solvents are ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, cyclohexanone, glycol monoethyl ether acetate, toluene and xylene. Specified accelerators and retarders are hexahydrodimethyl aniline, N:N1-dimethyl piperazine, N:N1-endoethylene piperazine, iron acetonyl acetate, dibutyl tin dilaurate and zinc naphthenate. In the examples, polyesters are made from:-(1) trimethylol propane, 1:3-butylene glycol, fumaric acid and anthracene; (2) ethylene glycol, hexanetriol, anthracene and fumaric acid; (3) 1:3-butylene glycol, maleic anhydride, trimethylol propane, triethanolamine and anthracene; (4) ethylene glycol, glycerine, phthalic anhydride and the Diels-Alder adduct of maleic anhydride and 2-methyl anthracene and (5) and (6) trimethylol propane, ethylene glycol, phthalic anhydride, fumaric acid and anthracene, the polyesters being dissolved in:-(1) ethyl acetate and glycol monoethyl acetate; (2), (3) and (5) ethyl acetate, glycol monoethyl acetate and butyl acetate and (6) ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and toluene and reacted with:-(1a), (1c) and (2) to (6) N:N1:N1-tris(isocyantohexyl) biuret; (1b) a triisocyanate made by reacting excess 3-isocyanatophenyl-a -isocyanatoethane with trimethylol propane and (1d) 4:41-hexahydrodiphenyl diisocyanate. |
