Disclosed is a method of detecting a papilloma virus infection in an organis m, the method comprising the steps of: obtaining a sample of the organism's cells from the site of potential infection; contacting the cells with a molecule that binds specifically to papilloma virus E4 protein; and monitoring said binding, together with a method of determining the types) of HPV infecting a patient, a method of screening a patient for the presence of a precancerous cervical lesion, and an antibod y molecule of use in one of the above methods.
