A drain pump of a washing machine is cyclically activated during a drai n operation conducted as part of a spin cycle in a manner which reduces the ru n time of the pump. At least one dynamic operating parameter of the washing machine is sensed and used to control the operation of the drain pump. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the rotational spee d of the wash tub is sensed and, when a predetermined spin speed is maintained fo r a prescribed period of time, the drain operation is initiated. Water level, pu mp power and/or drive motor torque can also be utilized as pump cycling control parameters.
