A ball detection apparatus for detecting when a golf ball is hit off a golf tee of an automatic golf ball teeing machine includes a radar device 13 for producing a first signal in response to detecting movement of a golf club towards the tee 11, a directional microphone 15 for producing a second signal in response to detecting the sound of a golf club striking the golf ball and a monitoring processor for detecting a coincidence between the first and second signals, and in particular when the sound signal occurs within a window defined by the period of time that the radar indicates the club head is at maximum velocity and the sound signal exceeds an amplitude threshold that is set in accordance of the maximum velocity of the club head. An automatic golf ball teeing machine including such ball detection apparatus feeds a new ball to the tee when a hit off is detected. This ball detection apparatus and distinguishes between a ball being struck off the tee and simply falling off the tee and is not affected by environmental factors such as the dimples on the ball or mud on the ball.
