PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to detect paper money by a single detection sensor even when warped or broken paper money is accumulated and reserved in an accumulation part. SOLUTION: The paper sheets storage device is provided with an accumulation part 20 which accumulates paper money, a storage part 57 which is prepared through a separator 56 in the direction where paper money is accumulated in this accumulation part 20, a detection sensor 71 which detects paper money accumulated in the accumulation part 20, a backup plate 54 which pushes in the money into the storage part 57 passing the paper money through the separator 56, based on paper money that is detected by this detection sensor 71, and a control part 73 which controls so that paper money is flattened being pressed against the separator 56 by operating backup plate 54, based on the detection sensor 71 that does not detect paper money accumulated in the accumulation part 20.
