PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alignment method which is unaffected by change in an optical axis caused by change in optical output, in a method for aligning the optical axis of an optical module for a laser diode and an optical fiber. SOLUTION: In the optical axis alignment method for an optical module, a diamond scan is implemented on an LD 2, at a prescribed initial X-coordinate position, in the YZ direction vertical to the optical axis of the LD 2 to determine the optimum position for maximizing the transmitting output in that direction. Then, with the X-coordinate position moved, the center position in the YZ plane to be scanned by a diamond scan is moved to the position capable of obtaining the maximum transmitting output obtained previously in the diamond scan in the X-coordinate position. With the diamond scan carried out successively, the optical axis alignment is performed by positioning in the manner that the position of the highest coupling efficiency becomes the center point of the YZ plane for the diamond scan.
