PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing a quaternary ammonium halide having high quality quaternary ammonium salt containing little amount of amine salts and expressing little discoloration as that obtained by a conventional method. SOLUTION: The method for producing quaternary ammonium halide expressed by formula (1): Q<SP>+</SP>X<SP>-</SP>(1) (wherein Q<SP>+</SP>expresses a quaternary ammonium cation; X<SP>-</SP>expresses a halogen anion) is to react a tertiary amine with an alkyl halide in the presence of a basic alkaline earth metal compound.
