PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve intravascular optical imaging in a medical imaging method and a medical imaging system for taking an intravascular image. SOLUTION: Light within the infrared range irradiates an area to be examined via an optical conductor 6 guided into a catheter 2 to take an intravascular image. Optical signals are guided via the optical conductor 6 into evaluation units 10a, 10b and processed for imaging. Image information selectively obtained from at least two of the following imaging systems (i), (ii), (iii) is alternately or simultaneously evaluated during the examination: (i) an imaging system by optical coherence tomographic imaging using light with wavelength selected so that the light penetrates tissue; (ii) an imaging system by optical coherence tomographic imaging using light with wavelength selected so that the light penetrates blood; (iii) an imaging system wherein a light radiation image is taken by an infrared camera 10B.
