PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for an internal combustion engine which suppresses the deterioration in strength of a land between ring grooves and prevents oil consumption. SOLUTION: A piston 1 for an internal combustion engine is provided to a cylinder 2 of the internal combustion engine so as to be freely reciprocatable, and forms a combustion chamber between the piston 1 and the cylinder 2. In a piston for an internal combustion engine equipped with at least two ring grooves 3, 4 formed in the outer periphery of the piston 1 for inserting rings 5, 6 and an annular land 7 formed between the ring grooves, a recess 8 is partially formed in the peripheral direction of the annular land 7.
